HARARE – Afro Jazz sensation Godfrey “Mwendamberi” Chirau delivered a spellbinding debut performance at the Shoko Festivals.

The artist, who featured in the Mash Up Night segment last Thursday, left the crowd clamouring for more with his powerful and evocative vocals.

Accompanied by songstress Feli Nandi, the duo performed a heart-warming rendition of the song, “Handini Newe” taken from Mwendamberi’s latest album, “Gombo”.

Buoyed by thunderous applause, the artists launched into his next tune, the traditional urging for divine intervention, “Burutsai Masimba”.

The intoxicating rhythm, paired with breath-taking harmonies, resonated with the crowd long after the performance ended.

Fans demanded his return on stage when his time slot was over.

Mwendamberi thanked his fans for the support during his inaugural performance at Shoko Festival.

He later told ZimLive the reception by the fans caught him by surprise.

“I was not expecting the reception I got from the crowd considering my songs are still new and I was surprised how easily they understood the lyrics and started singing along with me,” he said.

Mwendamberi attributes his musical inspiration to the rich cultural and traditional values instilled in him from childhood.

With two albums and an impressive 44 songs to his name, the Harare based performer has already graced some of the biggest stages on the globe.
