GWERU – Two police officers had a lucky escape but their vehicle was badly damaged after colliding with a train in Gweru on Tuesday night.

The National Railways of Zimbabwe said the police driver of the Mahindra pick-up truck failed to give way at a rail level crossing at around 8PM.

“There were two police officers in the car. The driver was injured and transported to hospital while the other police officer escaped unhurt,” NRZ spokesman Andrew Kunambura said.

“This is the second such incident this year following another collision in Marondera in January involving a police Ford Ranger.”

He urged motorists, “including police officers, to exercise extreme caution at rail crossings.”

He added: “We are seeing this type of accident happening across the country with alarming regularity. Drivers must come to a complete stop, check for approaching trains and proceed with caution. Never attempt to race a train.”
