HARARE – A police officer accused of beating a suspect in custody leading to their death has evaded arrest and gone on the run, police said on Sunday.

Prince Ndavambi, who was based at Ruwa Police Station, allegedly tortured Blessed Believe Juruvenge who was in custody accused of assaulting a man who bought goods from his tuckshop with a fake $100 note.

National police spokesman Commissioner Paul Nyathi denied claims by some of Juruvenge’s family that they were dragging their feat over the investigation.

“Sadly, Constable Navambi disappeared as his arrest was imminent. He is on the run. The Commissioner General of police Stephen Mutamba has made it clear that the law is the law and no-one will sweep this disturbing case under the carpet,” Nyathi added.
