HARARE – Highlanders and Dynamos have both crashed out of the Chibuku Super Cup, shattering hopes of a dream clash between the country’s most followed teams in the later stages of the premier knockout tournament.

Highlanders fell to a 67th minute goal by Bulawayo Chiefs’ Malvin Mkolo in a Chibuku Super Cup Quarter Final match played at Barbourfields Stadium Sunday.

The derby also saw Highlanders vice-captain Peter Muduwa red carded with just 20 minutes into the clash for a second bookable offence but the decision was immediately rescinded by the referee of the day.

However, the aggressive Bosso defender finally got his marching orders on the stroke of full time after hitting an opponent with his elbow.

In the match played at the National Sports Stadium same day, Dembare also surrendered hopes of ending the season with any silverware after losing 2-4 on penalties to FC Platinum.

The match had ended goalless after normal time.

In another quarter final clash played Sunday, Black Rhinos progressed to the semis after beating Chicken Inn 10-9 on penalties when normal time failed to separate the two sides which had ended their encounter tied 1-1.

Sunday’s exit from the Chibuku Super Cup by Highlanders and Dynamos mean that none of the country’s most followed teams will feature in the final while it is advantage to premiership log leaders FC Platinum who have the opportunity to clinch a dream double this season.

Meanwhile, in the semis, Black Rhinos clash Bulawayo Chiefs while FC Platinum will play Herentals who progressed after beating Manica Diamonds 2-1 in a match played Saturday at the National Sports Stadium.
