HARARE – Harare will finally see the return of premiership football this Sunday after the Premier Soccer League Tuesday announced the reopening of the National Sports Stadium in time for the much-anticipated Harare derby pitying familiar rivals Dynamos and Caps United.
Zimbabwe’s biggest sporting facility was forced to close in June this year to pave way for the repair of a broken-down toilet and water reticulation system.
This saw premiership teams based in Harare having to seek alternative venues to host their home matches outside the capital after other stadiums in the city were long decommissioned to host games.
Dynamos was forced to turn to Barbourfields as its home ground while Caps United opted for Baobab stadium in Ngezi.
In a development set to bring back smiles on the faces of football fans in Harare, the iconic stadium reopens with the Premier Soccer League confirming the availability of the 60,000-seater facility for football on Sunday.
However, during the intervening period, government occasionally used the stadium to host events like the annual Heroes Day celebrations, late iconic preacher Ezekiel Guti’s public send-off and more recently President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s inauguration.
